Background Anemia of chronic disease is known to be associated with inflammation. However, the relationship between hemoglobin (Hb) levels and potential inflammatory markers such as neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume-to-platelet count ratio (MPV/PC) has not been extensively studied. The primary objective of this retrospective analytical study conducted at Al Zahraa Hospital University Medical Center (ZHUMC), Beirut, was to investigate the correlation between Hb levels and potential inflammatory markers (NLR, MLR, PLR, MPV/PC) in patients visiting the emergency department (ED), across different genders and age groups. The secondary objectives were to compare Hb levels and inflammatory markers values between the referred medical ward group (the hospitalized patients who were admitted to the medical ward), and the non-referred to medical ward group (the patients who were discharged home from the ED), and to evaluate the predictability of inflammatory markers and Hb levels for referral to the medical ward, including the determination of optimal cutoff values for hospital admission to the medical ward. Methods We analyzed the blood parameters of 379 adult patients who presented to the ED with various medical complaints between September 1, 2022, and November 30, 2022 (three months). These patients were included in the study after we checked their eligibility regarding the verification of all our inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results Our findings revealed a significant negative correlation between Hb levels and PLR (r = -0.24) in both genders and across different age groups. The group referred to the medical ward exhibited lower Hb levels and higher NLR, MLR, and PLR values (P < 0.001). NLR/Hb ratio emerged as a predictive factor for admission in genitourinary (R² = 0.158; OR = 5.62) and respiratory groups (R² = 0.206; OR = 5.89), with specific cutoff values of 0.533 (Sensitivity = 57.1% & Specificity = 84.2%) and 0.276 (Sensitivity = 85% & Specificity = 51.1%), respectively. Conclusions Our study demonstrates that hemoglobin level negatively correlates with PLR. NLR, MLR, and PLR stand as important inflammatory markers. Moreover, we present the first study in the literature to show that NLR/Hb ratio can serve as a predictor for referral to the medical ward, particularly in the genitourinary and respiratory patient groups, underscoring its value in risk assessment as a prognostic marker reflecting the need for admission when the case is more serious.

BACKGROUND: Left atrial (LA) volume indexing for body surface area (BSA) is the common practice. Since LA volume index is of cardiovascular pathophysiologic significance, it is suggested that indexing for other body size parameters be explored to evaluate a more appropriate alternative method. The aims of this study were to find normal and the best cutoff values for LA volume indexed for multiple body size parameters in normal Indian subjects. METHODS: Data from the multicentric prospective INDEA study conducted through 2018 to 2020 was reviewed and subjects without known cardiac disease and completely normal echocardiograms that had the left atrial volume (LAV) measured by biplane Simpson's method were included. LAV was indexed by BSA (ml/m2), by height (LAV/m), by height raised to exponent 1.72 (mL/m 1.72 and 2.7 (ml/m2.7), by body weight, by ideal body weight (IBW), by ideal body surface area (IBSA) and by height squared (ml/h2). RESULTS: A total of 1046 healthy volunteers (382 female, 38%), mean age 38 ± 10.4 years (range 30-48 years) and body mass index 23.6 kg/m2 (22-25 kg/m2) were analyzed. Mean and normal values were: LAV/BSA 18.7 + 3.15 ml/m2 (range 15-21 ml/m2), LAV/ht 26.0 ± 4.5 ml/m, (range 17-35 ml/m), LAV/ht2 16 ± 2.8 ml/m2 (range 10.4-21.6 ml/m2) and LAV/ht2.7 8.71 ± 2.2 ml/m2.7 (range 6.98-13.58 ml/m2.7). Using ROC curve analysis, LAV/h 1.72 had the highest AUC and the best predictive value to identify LA enlargement but not very different from LAV/BSA. Ideal BSA and ideal body weight as a denominator did not provide any incremental value. CONCLUSION: Normal values for LAV indexed for height, weight, body surface area by three different methods of height as an allometric parameter are described in normal Indian individuals. We reinforce that LA volume indexation for BSA is an acceptable and robust method in non-obese Indian subjects. Indexing for height 1.72 is probably slightly superior method to evaluate LAV.

Purpose: This study aims to compare the association of hypertension plus hyperuricemia (HTN-HUA) with seven anthropometric indexes. These include the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), body roundness index (BRI), a body shape index (ABSI), and the cardiometabolic index (CMI). Methods: Data was procured from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which recruited a representative population aged 18 years and above to calculate these seven indexes. Logistic regression analysis was employed to delineate their correlation and to compute the odds ratios (OR). Concurrently, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to evaluate the predictive power of the seven indexes. Results: A total of 23,478 subjects were included in the study. Among these, 6,537 (27.84%) were patients with HUA alone, 2,015 (8.58%) had HTN alone, and 2,836 (12.08%) had HTN-HUA. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the AIP, LAP, VAI, TyG, BRI, ABSI, and CMI were all significantly associated with concurrent HTN-HUA. The OR for the highest quartile of the seven indexes for HTN-HUA were as follows: AIP was 4.45 (95% CI 3.82-5.18), LAP was 9.52 (95% CI 7.82-11.59), VAI was 4.53 (95% CI 38.9-5.28), TyG was 4.91 (95% CI 4.15-5.80), BRI was 9.08 (95% CI 7.45-11.07), ABSI was 1.71 (95% CI 1.45 -2.02), and CMI was 6.57 (95% CI 5.56-7.76). Notably, LAP and BRI demonstrated significant discriminatory abilities for HTN-HUA, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.72 (95% CI 0.71 - 0.73) and 0.73 (95% CI 0.72 - 0.74) respectively. Conclusion: The AIP, LAP, VAI, TyG, BRI, ABSI, and CMI all show significant correlation with HTN-HUA. Notably, both LAP and BRI demonstrate the capability to differentiate cases of HTN-HUA. Among these, BRI is underscored for its effective, non-invasive nature in predicting HTN-HUA, making it a superior choice for early detection and management strategies.

The impact of external factors on the human gut microbiota and how gut microbes contribute to human health is an intriguing question. Here, the gut microbiome of 3,224 individuals (496 with serum metabolome) with 109 variables is studied. Multiple analyses reveal that geographic factors explain the greatest variance of the gut microbiome and the similarity of individuals' gut microbiome is negatively correlated with their geographic distance. Main food components are the most important factors that mediate the impact of host habitats on the gut microbiome. Diet and gut microbes collaboratively contribute to the variation of serum metabolites, and correlate to the increase or decrease of certain clinical indexes. Specifically, systolic blood pressure is lowered by vegetable oil through increasing the abundance of Blautia and reducing the serum level of 1-palmitoyl-2-palmitoleoyl-GPC (16:0/16:1), but it is reduced by fruit intake through increasing the serum level of Blautia improved threonate. Besides, aging-related clinical indexes are also closely correlated with the variation of gut microbes and serum metabolites. In this study, the linkages of geographic locations, diet, the gut microbiome, serum metabolites, and physiological indexes in a Chinese population are characterized. It is proved again that gut microbes and their metabolites are important media for external factors to affect human health.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown subjects suffering from diabetes or persistent hyperglycemia were more likely to develop tuberculosis (TB). However, the global burden of TB attributed to high fasting plasma glucose (HFPG) remains unclear. This study aimed to characterize the global, regional, and national TB burden attributed to HFPG from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: With Global Burden of Disease study 2019, the numbers and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardized disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates (ASDR) of TB attributed to HFPG at global, regional, and national levels from 1990 to 2019 were extracted. The locally weighted regression model was applied to estimate the TB burden for different socio-demographic index (SDI) regions. RESULTS: Globally, the ASMR and ASDR attributed to HFPG were 2.70 (95% UI, 1.64-3.94) and 79.70 (95% UI, 50.26-112.51) per 100,000 population in 1990, respectively. These rates decreased to 1.46 (95% UI, 0.91-2.08) and 45.53 (95% UI, 29.06-62.29) in 2019. The TB burden attributed to HFPG remained high in low SDI and Central Sub-Saharan Africa regions, while it declined with most significantly in high SDI and East Asia regions. Additionally, the ASMR and ASDR of TB attributed to HFPG were significantly higher in the male and the elderly population. CONCLUSIONS: The global TB burden attributable to HFPG decreased from 1990 to 2019, but remained high in low SDI regions among high-risk populations. Thus, urgent efforts are required to enhance the awareness of early glycemic control and TB treatment to alleviate the severe situation.

The ecological status of Algeciras Bay (South-west Europe), highly influenced by anthropogenic activities, was assessed by monitoring Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu in water and sediment samples. Total contents and metal fractions with different availabilities and their spatial-seasonal distribution were determined. The trend in water and sediment contents were Zn > Pb ≈ Cu > Cd, without significant seasonal variations. Sites 3 and 4, closest to industrial activities, had the highest metal concentrations, mainly in sediments. Cd showed low partition coefficient in water, indicating higher bioavailability. Total metal content in sediments exceeded the threshold effect level for Cu and were close to Pb. The BCR procedure revealed the highest availabilities for Cd and Pb, due to its higher content in exchangeable and reducible fractions. Higher Pb levels (21.4 ± 5.1 mg/kg) were found in sediments of this bay compared with other ecosystems. Pollution indexes for sediment quality revealed that site 3 was the most polluted (CF = 7.12 and Igeo = 2.25). For an integrative study of the ecological status of this significant bay, these results have been complemented with the metal evaluation in benthic and benthopelagic fish tissues in Ecological status of Algeciras Bay, in a highly anthropised area in south-west Europe, through metal assessment-Part II: Biotic samples.

Biotic samples from Algeciras Bay (South-west Europe) were studied to assess its ecological status, complementing the previous abiotic monitoring of trace metals in water and sediments. This bay is a densely populated area with intense port traffic and is highly industrialised with metal inputs. To study the impact of this, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu contents were determined in tissues of benthic (Solea senegalensis) and benthopelagic species (Scorpaena porcus, Trigloporus lastoviza, and Diplodus sargus sargus). Notable levels of Zn and Cu were found in the liver and gills of all fish species. Compared to international muscle guidelines, Pb sometimes exceeded the most restrictive values, outstanding S. porcus with 27% of samples above the permissible value. Metal pollution indexes revealed that the liver and gills of benthic species were more affected by metal pollution than benthopelagic species, especially in most industrialised sites. Particularly, S. senegalensis presented a higher accumulation factor from sediment of Cd and Cu in the liver (30.1 and 345.1), probably due to the close interaction as benthic species. Among the species studied, S. senegalensis and D. sargus sargus proved to be the best representative and useful bioindicators of metal-polluted environments as this bay. The results were consistent with the findings from the abiotic samples.

The accumulation of pollutants in the sediment along surface water may negatively affect riparian zones and increase ecological risk. This article investigates the effects of metal sediments on riparian soil via field monitoring and ICP-OES analysis. To this end, pollution levels, seasonal changes, and potential sources of the pollutants were determined for the Melen River watershed, Turkey. The ecological statuses (contamination factor, enrichment factor, index of geo-accumulation, pollution index, modified pollution index, and potential and modified ecological risk indexes) of the watershed were also analyzed. Although no significant seasonal differences in the metal sediments were observed, their spatial distribution in the sediments and riparian soils varied markedly. Cr (11.4 to 136), Co (7.7 to 21.52), Cu (11.4 to 76.6), and Ni (14.06 to 128.2) recorded as mg/kg significantly increased from the upstream to the downstream. The metals possessing the highest risk in the sediment and riparian soil regarding the river health were Cu, Co, and Ni. The risk values were found to be heavily polluted (PI > 3 and MPI > 10), and the risk indexes were above the "desired environment without the risk". The risk index was found to be more than 50, and the modified risk indexes exceeded 200 at many points. The transportation of pollutants in surface water became evident in the sediment, resulting in adverse effects on the riparian zone and the ecological system.

The typology and classification of rivers are highly relevant concepts in the field of limnology and freshwater ecology. Water body typology systematically categorizes water bodies based on their natural attributes, while water body classification groups them based on specific criteria or purposes for management, regulatory, or administrative reasons. Both concepts play important roles in understanding and managing water resources effectively. This scientific article focuses on the ZAT River in Morocco as a model for studying low-flow and intermittent rivers. The objective is to develop an accurate model for the typology and classification of small, low-flow rivers into homogeneous classes based on natural and anthropogenic factors. The study also investigates the impact of human activities on altering the uniformity and reference nature of the water body. The typology of water bodies is carried out according to the European methodology specified in The European Commission's Water Framework Directive (WFD) in 2000. The classification of water bodies is conducted by assessing their chemical and biological quality using the weighted index (WI), the Iberian Biological Monitoring Working Group (IBMWP) index, and multivariate statistical methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) for confirming water quality assessment. The results indicate the possibility of dividing the basin into four water bodies. Water bodies show homogeneity in terms of chemical quality when human influence is minimal or during periods of high river flow. However, increased human influence and decreased river flows lead to heterogeneity in chemical quality, indicating an unstable state. This study is the first of its kind in arid and semi-arid intermittent rivers, where such an approach could be suggested to determine their typology and classification.

The Huelva estuary is formed by the common mouths of the Odiel and Tinto Rivers, and inside this ecosystem is the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. This ecosystem has been historically affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) and by releases of pollutants from five phosphoric acid industrial plants and phosphogypsum (PG) waste stacks located in the area. This study carried out a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impact of the biosphere reserve of the Odiel saltmarshes. To this end, it was necessary to find a suitable sedimentary background (Piedras River in our case). To quantify this impact, several pollution indexes were used. According to the values reached by the indexes, this impact was classified as "serious" pollution for most trace elements, excepting the deepest layers, and "low-moderate" pollution for the 238U-series radionuclides, while no pollution for the 232Th-series and 40K radionuclides was found as expected.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a common agricultural pest known for its extensive migration and wide host ranges, causes considerable harm to maize (Zea mays L.). In this study, we utilized two molecular marker genes, COI and Tpi, to compare the genetic characteristics of the collected original samples. Additionally, through an interactive study between S. frugiperda larvae and six maize varieties aiming to understand the insect's adaptability and resistance mechanisms, our analysis revealed that both the COI and Tpi genes identified S. frugiperda as the corn strain. Further examination of the larvae showed significant differences in nutritional indices, digestive, and detoxification enzyme activities. Special maize varieties were found to offer higher efficiency in nutrient conversion and assimilation compared with common varieties. This study revealed adaptations in S. frugiperda's digestive and detoxification processes in response to the different maize varieties. For instance, larvae reared on common maize exhibited elevated amylase and lipase activities. Interestingly, detoxification enzyme activities exhibited different patterns of variation in different maize varieties. The Pearson correlation analysis between nutritional indices, enzyme activities, and the nutritional content and secondary metabolites of maize leaves provided deeper insights into the pest's adaptability. The results highlighted significant relationships between specific nutritional components in maize and the physiological responses of S. frugiperda. Overall, our findings contribute substantially to the understanding of S. frugiperda's host plant adaptability, offering critical insights for the development of sustainable pest management strategies.

Objective: To investigate the value of the combined test of seven blood coagulation indexes, lipids and platelet agglutination on the evaluation of the hypercoagulable state of blood in parturient women. Methods: This is a retrospective study. Total 50 high risk parturient women who underwent an antenatal examination in Baoding Maternal and Child Health Hospital from June 2021 to January 2023 were selected as the observation group, while 50 normal parturient women who underwent antenatal examination without comorbidities and complications were randomly collected in a ratio of 1:1 as the control group. All subjects had venous blood drawn for testing of seven blood coagulation indexes, lipids and platelet agglutination before delivery, and their general data were recorded. Results: The activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT) in the observation group was lower than that in the control group, while thrombin time(TT) and D-dimer(DD) were both higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences(p<0.05); total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in the observation group were both higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (p<0.05); adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and arachidonic acid (AA) in the observation group were both higher than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (p<0.05). Moreover, the overall incidence of adverse pregnancy was higher in the observation group than in the control group, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusions: The combined test of seven blood coagulation indexes, lipids and platelet agglutination results in excellent performance in predicting and judging the presence or absence of the hypercoagulable state of blood in parturient women, with the combination of APTT+TT+DD+TG+ADP+AA being the preferred test.

Objective: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of a fatty acid-balanced oil, instead of soybean oil, on reproductive performance, nutrient digestibility, blood indexes, milk composition in lactating sows, and fecal microbial composition in piglets. Methods: Twenty-four sows (Landrace × Yorkshire, mean parity 4.96) were randomly allotted to two treatments with twelve pens per treatment and one sow per pen based on their backfat thickness and parity. The experiment began on day 107 of gestation and continued until weaning on day 21 of lactation, lasting for 28 days. The control group (CG) was fed a basal diet supplemented with 2% soybean oil and the experimental group (EG) was fed the basal diet supplemented with 2% fatty acid-balanced oil. Results: The fatty acid-balanced oil supplementation increased (p<0.05) the apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and gross energy in sows. The lower (p<0.05) serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and albumin levels of sows were observed in the EG on day 21 of lactation. Dietary supplementation with the fatty acid-balanced oil decreased the fat content, increased the immunoglobulin G level, and changed (p<0.05) some fatty acid content in milk. Moreover, the fatty acid-balanced oil supplementation changed (p<0.05) the fecal microbial composition of piglets, where the average relative abundance of Spirochaetota was decreased (p<0.05) by 0.55% at the phylum level, and the average relative abundance of some potentially pathogenic fecal microorganism was decreased (p<0.05) at the species level. Conclusion: The fatty acid-balanced oil improved nutrient digestibility, changed the serum biochemical indices and milk composition of sows, and ameliorated the fecal microbial composition of piglets.

Background: There were seven novel and easily accessed insulin resistance (IR) surrogates established, including the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC) and TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR). We aimed to explore the association between the seven IR surrogates and incident coronary heart disease (CHD), and to compare their predictive powers among Chinese population. Methods: This is a 10-year prospective cohort study conducted in China including 6393 participants without cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. We developed Cox regression analyses to examine the association of IR surrogates with CHD (hazard ratio [HR], 95% confidence intervals [CI]). Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to compare the predictive values of these indexes for incident CHD by the areas under the ROC curve (AUC). Results: During a median follow-up period of 10.25 years, 246 individuals newly developed CHD. Significant associations of the IR surrogates (excepted for VAI) with incident CHD were found in our study after fully adjustment, and the fifth quintile HRs (95% CIs) for incident CHD were respectively 2.055(1.216-3.473), 1.446(0.948-2.205), 1.753(1.099-2.795), 2.013(1.214-3.339), 3.169(1.926-5.214), 2.275(1.391-3.719) and 2.309(1.419-3.759) for CVAI, VAI, LAP, TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC and TyG-WHtR, compared with quintile 1. Furthermore, CVAI showed maximum predictive capacity for CHD among these seven IR surrogates with the largest AUC: 0.632(0.597,0.667). Conclusion: The seven IR surrogates (excepted for VAI) were independently associated with higher prevalence of CHD, among which CVAI is the most powerful predictor for CHD incidence in Chinese populations.

PURPOSE: To develop predictive nomograms of lymph vascular space invasion (LVSI) in patients with early-stage cervical cancer. METHODS: We identified 403 patients with cervical cancer from the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University from January 2015 to December 2019. Patients were divided into the training set (n = 242) and the validation set (n = 161), with patients in the training set subdivided into LVSI (+) and LVSI (-) groups according to postoperative pathology. Preoperative hematologic indexes were compared between the two subgroups. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the independent risk factors for LVSI, from which a nomogram was constructed using the R package. RESULTS: LVSI (+) was present in 94 out of 242 patients in the training set, accompanied by a significant increase in the preoperative squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophil (NE), platelet (PLT), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic inflammation index (SII), and tumor size (P < 0.05). Univariate analysis showed that SCC, WBC, NE, NLR, PLR, SII, and tumor size were correlated with LVSI (P < 0.05), and multivariate analysis showed that tumor size, SCC, WBC, and NLR were independent risk factors for LVSI (P < 0.05). A nomogram was correspondingly established with good performance in predicting LVSI [training: ROC-AUC = 0.845 (95% CI: 0.731-0.843) and external validation: ROC-AUC = 0.704 (95% CI: 0.683-0.835)] and high accuracy (training: C-index = 0.787; external validation: C-index = 0.759). CONCLUSION: The nomogram based on preoperative tumor size, SCC, WBC, and NLR had excellent accuracy and discriminative capability to assess the risk of LVSI in early-stage cervical cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections are a major health problem that deteriorates the patients' health and increases health care costs. A reliable method to identify patients with modifiable risk of surgical site infection is necessary to reduce the incidence of them but data are limited. Hence the objective is to assess the predictive validity of a logistic regression model compared to risk indexes to identify patients at risk of surgical site infections. METHODS: In this study, we evaluated the predictive validity of a new model which incorporates important predictors based on logistic regression model compared to three state-of-the-art risk indexes to identify high risk patients, recruited from 2016 to 2020 from a medium size hospital in North Norway, prone to surgical site infection. RESULTS: The logistic regression model demonstrated significantly higher scores, defined as high-risk, in 110 patients with surgical site infections than in 110 patients without surgical site infections (p < 0.001, CI 19-44) compared to risk indexes. The logistic regression model achieved an area under the curve of 80 %, which was better than the risk indexes SSIRS (77 %), NNIS (59 %), and JSS-SSI (52 %) for predicting surgical site infections. The logistic regression model identified operating time and length of stay as the major predictors of surgical site infections. CONCLUSIONS: The logistic regression model demonstrated better performance in predicting surgical site infections compared to three state-of-the-art risk indexes. The model could be further developed into a decision support tool, by incorporating predictors available prior to surgery, to identify patients with modifiable risk prone to surgical site infection.

The physicochemical indexes and microbial diversity were investigated to compare the altered quality properties of the abdomen and cheliped muscle in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) during 100 days of frozen storage at -20℃. Over the extended duration of frozen storage, the sensory evaluation, moisture content, water activity (Aw), and water-holding capacity (WHC) in the abdomen and cheliped muscles of swimming crab decreased, while the pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and trimethylamine (TMA) increased. The increase and decrease rates of these indicators were smaller in the abdomen than those in the cheliped muscle. High-throughput sequencing results indicated a reduction in the microbial richness and diversity in the abdomen and cheliped muscles of the swimming crab as frozen storage time extended. Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Firmicutes, Achromobacter, Kocuria, and Staphylococcus were the dominant phylum and genus in both muscle tissues, respectively. Furthermore, the correlation analysis between the composition of the microbiota and physiochemical properties revealed that the growths of Kocuria, Vibrio, Staphylococcus, and Aliiroseovarius were closely related to the physiochemical factors. The study provides a theoretical reference for quality deterioration and develops new products of different parts in the swimming crab during frozen storage.

PURPOSE: To explore the clinical value of various complete blood count (CBC)-derived inflammation indicators to predict in-hospital mortality in patients with extensive burns. METHODS: Systemic inflammation indexes, including lymphocyte-platelet ratio (LPR), neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), neutrophil-monocyte ratio (NMR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte * platelet (NLPR), systemic inflammation index (SII), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) on days 1, 3, and 7 after admission were calculated in 135 patients with extensive burns. RESULTS: We included 135 patients with extensive burns, including 97 survivors and 38 non-survivors. After adjusting for confounders, only the LPR on day 1, NLPR on days 3 and 7 were significantly associated with survival (OR= 1.237, 1.097, 1.104; 95 % CI: 1.055-1.451, 1.002-1.202, 1.005-1.212; respectively) in the analysis of multivariate logistic regression. The optimum cutoff values of the LPR on day 1 and NLPR on day 3 were 6.37 and 8.06, and the area under the curves (AUC) were 0.695 and 0.794, respectively. The AUC of NLPR on day 7 had the highest value, 0.814, and the optimum cut-off value was 3.84. The efficacy of LPR on day 1, NLPR on days 3 and 7 combined with the burn prognostic score index in predicting the prognosis of patients was higher than that of the burn index alone, and the three composite inflammatory indexes combined with PBI had the highest efficacy in predicting the prognosis (AUC = 0.994). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed poor prognosis in patients with higher LPR on day 1 and higher NLPR on days 3 and 7 (log-rank χ2 =9.623,31.564, 20.771, respectively; P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: LPR on day 1 and NLPR on days 3 and 7 after admission are reliable predictors of prognosis in patients with severe extensive burns. The combination of the burn prognostic score index, LPR on day 1, and NLPR on days 3 and 7 was superior to the burn indexes alone in predicting a patient's prognosis.

A certain amount of selenium (Se) is usually added to the diet of laying hens to improve the quality and nutritional value of eggs. The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of selenium-rich black soldier fly (BSF) supplementation in diets on laying production performance, egg quality, serum indexes, and egg selenium content of Hy-line variety brown laying hens. A total of 288 at 49-week-old healthy laying hens were divided into 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates per group and 16 hens per replicate using a single-factor completely randomized design. Treatments consisted of (1) control (basal diet without supplemental Se), (2) 0.30 mg/kg supplemental Se, (Se as sodium selenite, SS), and (3) 0.30 mg/kg supplemental Se (Se as selenium-rich black soldier fly, SE-BSF). Laying performance was not affected by dietary Se. There was no effect of selenium-rich BSF on egg quality (P > 0.05). The contents of malonaldehyde (MDA) were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). On the contrary, dietary Se supplementation increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD, P < 0.05) and catalase (CAT, P < 0.05) and increased the concentration of reduced glutathione (P < 0.05). In addition, selenium-rich BSF supplementation significantly increased the Se content of eggs (P < 0.05). These results indicate that Se supplementation did not affect laying production performance and egg quality of laying hens, but the supplementation could improve antioxidant capacity and increased the Se content of eggs.

PURPOSE: The role of prolactin (PRL) in glucolipid metabolism was inconsistent, and there were few studies on the metabolic role of PRL in obese patients. The study aims to explore association between PRL level and metabolic disorders in male obese patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted. Eighty-nine male patients with obesity were included, and their clinical data were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 89 male obese patients were included in this study. Their average age was 24.5 ± 9.0 years and BMI was 42.8 ± 9.1 kg/m2. The average waist circumference and body fat percentage was 129.6 ± 19.6 cm and 42.9 ± 8.0%, respectively. The median prolactin levels were 10.0 ng/ml (range: 3.93-30.1 ng/ml). 79.0% (49/62) of these patients presented with NAFLD and 77.3% (68/88) of them was dyslipidemia. Further, serum prolactin level was positively correlated with BMI (r = 0.225, P = 0.034), body fat percentage (r = 0.326, P = 0.017), ALT (r = 0.273, P = 0.011) and AST (r = 0.245, P = 0.029). Compared with low PRL group (<10 ng/ml), the incidence of morbid obesity and NAFLD was higher in high PRL group (morbid obesity: 71.1% vs 45.5%, P = 0.018 and NAFLD: 91.2% vs 64.3%, P = 0.013). In addition, the risk of NAFLD and morbid obesity in high PRL group (>10 ng/ml) was higher than low PRL group (OR:5.187, 95%CI 1.194-22.544, P = 0.028 and OR: 4.375, 95% CI 1.595-11.994, P = 0.004). The increased risk of NAFLD and morbid obesity in the high PRL group still existed after adjusting for age and Testosterone. CONCLUSION: Serum prolactin levels were positively associated with deterioration of metabolic indexes in male obese patients, as well as NAFLD and morbid obesity.
